Environment Canterbury is the promotional name for the Canterbury Regional Council, an elected body of 14 councillors. The regional council was formed from 33 different bodies with regional and resource management roles in November 1989.

The main role of the council is the promotion of sustainable management of natural and physical resources, primarily under the Resource Management Act 1991 leaving Environment Canterbury website and the Local Government Act 2002 leaving Environment Canterbury website The council is responsible for matters which have more than just local significance (those are the tasks of the city and district councils).  Funding is from rates, Government grants and from the users of council services.

Anyone on the electoral roll is entitled to vote in local authority elections. The elections for regional councillors are held once every three years.
