The Civil Defence department coordinates the Canterbury Civil Defence Emergency Management Group, which is a partnership of local authorities, emergency services and other organisations tasked with providing effective and comprehensive management of major hazards and their consequences anywhere in Canterbury. The department also provides emergency management advice, training courses for staff, general public and other organisations via the Emergency Management Training Centre (EMTC).
