Organics, such as green garden waste (leaves and twigs) and food waste, accounts for at least 100,301 tonnes disposed of to Canterbury's municipal landfill each year. This organic matter, when added to the landfill, breaks down without air to produce greenhouse gases and leachate (a harmful liquid that can contaminate soil and water).
