The Canterbury Hazardous Waste Management Strategy was produced in 2001 as part of the commitment by local authorities
in Canterbury to improve the management of hazardous wastes. It was reviewed and updated in 2006.
The Strategy is primarily designed to provide direction for local authorities, but it also provides guidance for generators and those individuals or organisations involved in the waste management industry.
While there are benefits in reducing the volumes of hazardous wastes produced, the long-term objective of the Strategy is reducing and eventually eliminating the impacts of hazardous waste on the environment.
Overseeing the implementation of the Strategy falls to the Canterbury Waste Subcommittee co-ordinated by Environment Canterbury.
Investigations of hazardous waste and its potential to cause adverse environmental effects in Canterbury provide a basis of prioritising hazardous wastes.
Seven hazardous waste streams were recommended as a high priority for management, these are:
1) cyanide waste,
2) chlorinated solvent sludge,
3) metal processing waste,
4) boron and CCA (copper, chromium and arsenic) timber treatment sludge,
5) agrichemical wastes,
6) household hazardous waste, and
7) waste oil.
The strategy consists of three parts:
- Part I contains the vision, objective and guiding principles for the Strategy. It then outlines the hazardous waste management issues and the strategies that will be needed to address these issues.
- Part II contains implementation programmes for strategies outlined in Part I.
- Part III outlines how the Strategy will be monitored.
