Learn about the Erosion and Sediment Control Guidelines and how to implement them in your day-to-day work.
The Guidelines, produced by Environment Canterbury in consultation with the earthworks industry, provide practical advice about on-site measures that help you meet resource consent conditions and prevent waterway and dust-related pollution.
With the help of our sponsors, Maccaferri NZ Ltd, RST Environmental Solutions Ltd and Orica Chemnet, Environment Canterbury offers a range of training workshops:
- Introduction - For Contractors on Earthwork Sites
- Introduction - For Consultants and Local Authority Staff
- Preparing Erosion and Sediment Control Plans (for people with some prior knowledge)
- Chemical Use (flocculants)
About the trainers
Clare Feeney of Environment Communications and Brian Handyside of Erosion Management have been delivering erosion and sediment control training for over ten years in many regions around New Zealand. Clare and Brian both train the introductory workshops for contractors and consultants. Brian is the sole trainer for the Chemical Use and Preparing Erosion and Sediment Control Plans workshops.

Chemical Use
- Next date to be confirmed
The current control measures in Environment Canterbury’s Erosion and Sediment Control Guidelines should retain almost all of the coarser textured sediments (e.g. silts and sands) provided they are implemented and maintained appropriately. However, the finer textured material, the so-called 'colouring' agent of sediment-laden water, is not so easily retained and the soils of Canterbury are no exception to this. A simple and robust treatment system has been devised that uses chemicals to treat and retain this fine textured material. It can be utilised as a rain initiated dosing system or as a one-off batch dosing application. The very real advantages of the system are its effectiveness in retaining the fine textured material, its cost effectiveness and its simplicity. It has been well tried elsewhere in New Zealand and is now mandatory on most earthwork sites in the Auckland area.
The course is a half-day course. It will consist of 'classroom' time followed by a field trip to assess the system in operation (provided a site is operational nearby). Course participants will learn how the system works, how to design and operate one for specific uses, the environmental effects of the chemical, spill procedures and what a chemical management plan should contain.
This course would suit those in the earthmoving industry including consultants, contractors and local authority staff.

Introduction - For Consultants and Local Authority Staff
- Next date to be confirmed
This is a two-day workshop for Consultants (who lodge consent applications for earthworks and stream works, prepare assessments of environmental effects and erosion and sediment control plans in support of these and calling for tenders for the approved works), Site Contract Managers, Local Authority staff (involved with policy, consenting and compliance associated with earthworks and stream works), and those wanting a detailed working knowledge of erosion and sediment prevention. This workshop provides a background understanding of erosion and sediment control methods and the environmental effects of sediment. Time is also spent visiting a hypothetical greenfield development site and preparing an erosion and sediment control plan. A more detailed training workshop on Preparing Erosion and Sediment Control Plans is available following on from this introductory two-day workshop.

Course Fee – to be confirmed. As a guide only, the last workshop was $660.00 including GST. Includes: your own copy of the Guidelines; lunch and morning and afternoon teas.

Preparing Erosion and Sediment Control Plans

Background understanding
The basic background understanding of erosion and sediment control methods and the environmental effects of sediment are dealt with by the introductory consultants and contractors courses. These courses deal with the "what" of erosion and sediment control and are a good introduction before this course.
This training workshop is a more advanced course that concentrates on how to more effectively apply this background information. It is pitched to those who already have some erosion and sediment control knowledge and who wish to progress to the next stage on how to more appropriately utilise the information in practice.
Course content
This Erosion and Sediment Control Plan course will be a day-long course. Some background material will be presented to ensure that all course participants have some basic knowledge to work from, but this will focus more on particular aspects of control measures, rather than merely duplicate this aspect of the more introductory courses. The use and part that chemicals can play will be discussed. Following on from this, several actual studies will be worked through as examples of how erosion and sediment control plans are prepared in practice. Course participants will be given background information on each of these and asked to develop an Erosion & Sediment Control Plan for each. These plans will then be compared with that which was actually prepared. As each example has been subjected to some sort of council scrutiny, the results of this will be available and worked through with course participants. Several such studies will be worked through during the day and these will vary from a reasonably straight-forward situation to the more complex.
Who should attend?
It is anticipated that this course would be applicable to those who already have some prior erosion and sediment control knowledge and are interested in application. This would include consulting engineers and Local Authority staff.
