Land information explanatory notes for contaminated sites.
Environment Canterbury maintains an electronic database to manage information about contaminated land and sites in the Canterbury Region that have accommodated land uses or activities that have the potential to cause contamination (sites where hazardous substances have been stored, used or disposed of). The database is called the Listed Land Use Register.
Certain activities or industry types involve the use or storage of hazardous substances. The Ministry for the Environment has produced a comprehensive list of these activities and industries, called the Hazardous Activities and Industries List (HAIL). For a number of years Environment Canterbury have been identifying sites on which any of these activities or industries are taking place, or took place in the past. Once information about these sites has been collected and verified by Environment Canterbury and the site owner, it is entered onto the Listed Land Use Register and assigned a category.
If analytical information from the collection of samples is not available, and the presence or absence of contamination has therefore not been determined, the site is registered under the category: Not Investigated.
If analytical information from the collection of samples is available, the site is registered under a category that represents the risk the site poses to people or the environment.
The Register contains information about approximately 3700 sites in the Canterbury Region. However, our records are not complete. Not all sites that have activities listed on the Hazardous Activities and Industries List have been identified yet. So, if a site is not listed on the register, it doesn't mean that an activity or industry on the HAIL is not occurring, or has not occurred in the past on the site. We recommend that you check this out for yourself, as well as asking us. You can do this by asking your local council, current and previous owners, neighbours etc.

Information derived from Environment Canterbury's Listed Land Use Register is made available under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1997 and Environment Canterbury's Contaminated Land Information Management Strategy (2009).
The information reflects Environment Canterbury's current understanding, which is based only on the information thus far obtained by it and held on record. It is released only as a copy of those records and may not provide a full, complete and accurate assessment of the site.

Registered sites on the database include those sites where activities have occurred that are known to have the potential to contaminate land. Further investigation is required to determine whether or not these sites are actually contaminated or the degree and extent of any residual contamination. No reliance can or should be placed on this information by any person as indicating the presence of contaminants on the site.
